Difference Between Washington Prison and Federal Prison
What is the Difference Between Federal Prison and Washington State Prison?
The primary difference between the Washington Prison System and the Federal Prisons for the United States is the offense's nature. Offenders of federal laws get sentenced in federal prisons while offenders and convicts of state laws in Washington get sentenced within the state prison system's provisions. The Washington State Department of Corrections has oversight and management of the state prison system. The Federal Bureau of Prisons handles the day-to-day activities involved in running a federal prison system. The Washington state prison system is under the jurisdiction of the state's criminal code, while the federal prison system has its legal definitions in title 11 of the United States code.
The Washington Prison System
There are 12 correctional facilities (with a total capacity of 16,994 spaces) under the Washington State Department of Corrections' auspices. In 2020, the agency's annual reports showed a daily population of 14,519 incarcerated individuals within the facilities. While the agency encourages continued interaction between inmates and their families/friends, there are guidelines for each interaction level. By rule of thumb, all packages, mails, and associated deliveries must undergo scrutiny before handing it to the inmate. All questionable items or objects listed as contraband are not allowed into the facility. There are consequences for violating the agency rules in this regard. For more information, read carefully the 'Send Something' page on the Department of Corrections website. Visitors must also abide by the rules of the agency regarding visitation schedules and conduct. The visitation page on the website provides more information. Washington County Jails
Jails are detention centers for shorter sentences (such as time for misdemeanors), confine persons arrested with no bail option, or a temporary place for prisoners in transit. Although less secure, it has the basic features of an incarceration facility:
- Restriction of freedom
- Strict regimens
- Regulated visits and access to the property
Jails are under the watch of county governments and local law enforcement departments. There are 59 jails throughout the 39 counties in Washington state. Jail administration and visitation hours vary with the facility. Interested persons may obtain Washington inmate records by contacting local law enforcement authorities and for information about visits and sending packages to inmates. Some counties provide online access to inmate records through the Sheriff's office or the city police department. Here are the addresses:

How Does the Federal Prison System Work?
The Federal Bureau of Justice in the United States manages the federal criminal justice system. A key aspect is establishing penal institutions to provide for persons served a prison sentence by the federal district courts. The Bureau of Prisons has immediate oversight of the 122 federal correctional institutions in the country. These facilities are graded into low, medium, high, and administrative security levels to accommodate offenders' safety spectrum. For better management, the BOP is subdivided into regions across the country. The federal correctional institutions in Washington state are under the Western Region. Here are their addresses:
